Reviews of the Best Setting Powders for Baking

Let’s dive into these products to find out which one is the best!

Kat Von D Lock-It Setting Powder

If you just hate that feeling of heavy makeup on your skin, this powder is truly a lifesaver. The formula is so lightweight that after application, or even when you’re baking, you will barely feel a thing. It just gives your foundation a flawless, velvety look with no extra chalkiness and flashback, making your skin ready and picture-perfect.

Also, the non-drying powder will blend so well and smoothly on the skin that it’s untraceable, so you’ll look like you’re not putting the extra products at all. After baking, this powder will lock down your base all day long, even in terrible humidity.

By the way, did you know that this powder is also vegan?

Coty Airspun Loose Face Powder

This powder has been a classic favorite for more than 80 years for a reason! It’s the go-to for baking of possibly every beauty guru ever. The product is formulated with tints that spread around your skin and even out naturally, so you should have no problem with creases or discolored patches.

Not only is it lightweight, but the powder can hide your fine lines, redness, and wrinkles with ease. It comes in several colors, so all skin types can use this perfectly fine. Plus, the packaging is really pretty.

I’m not a huge fan of the ingredient list, however, as some are not organic and healthy.

  • Things we didn’t like
  • Evens out complexion
  • No creases or clumps
  • Hides imperfections
  • Various shades
  • Quite long-lasting

L’Oreal Paris Makeup Infallible Pro-Sweep & Lock Loose Matte Setting Face Powder

Try this out if you’re going for a very matte makeup look. You don’t even need much of the product to bake your under eyes, and it works perfectly for contour zones or even lips. Also, it’s nice to find an actual no color, translucent powder that doesn’t make you look like a ghost in photos at night.

Its formula helps blur your imperfections and minimize the appearance of your pores and blemishes and still lock your makeup for a glam look. Don’t worry if you have oily skin, because this one can control shine easily.

The amount of product can be a bit disappointing inside the package.

  • Thing we liked
  • Things we didn’t like
  • Matte finish
  • Applicable for all zones
  • Pore-minimising and blurring
  • Oil and shine control
  • Weak packaging
  • A little amount of powder

Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder

The powder has been a cult classic for years and has even won awards for its gorgeous effects on your skin. It’s probably the most feather-light formula I’ve ever seen. When you dab the powder on your skin, it can feel like nothing and blends smoothly onto your foundation and makes your face look flawless all day long. You won’t be able to even see you’re fine lines, let alone others.

It’s suitable for basically all skin tones, but if you have oily or combination skin, you’re gonna worship this for its oil-free ingredient list. Also, it’s dermatologist tested and non-comedogenic.

  • Thing we liked
  • Things we didn’t like
  • Very lightweight
  • Long-lasting
  • Blendable and even
  • Usable for all skin tones
  • Dermatologist tested
  • Quite expensive
  • Flimsy packaging

Ben Nye Banana Luxury Powder

Well, if Kim Kardashian swears by this, we should give it a go! Translucent with just a hint of color, the powder can really make your foundation or concealer look like actual skin. Yet, it can help you battle dark circles under your eyes and leave your complexion even.

It stays on all day long without much creasing or flaking, so you would want to bake this for a night out! Plus, the powder has a total of 8 shades, so even if you’re ten or so pale, it works regardless.

  • Thing we liked
  • Things we didn’t like
  • Natural finish
  • Great for under eyes
  • Long-lasting
  • Great shade selection
  • Weak packaging
  • A bit expensive for the amount

What is Baking?

No, you don’t need your kitchen for this one, but feel free to have a snack anyways.

Baking, or cooking, is an old-school makeup technique that you should definitely use for a flawless and creaseless makeup look, especially for your under-eyes, T-zone and contouring areas.

It’s essentially letting translucent setting powder sit on top of your concealer or foundation for about 5 to 10 minutes. During that time, your skin will heat up and set as well as even out the makeup so that it looks like actual skin, and the powder will absorb the excess oil.

It may take a while longer than just going with your normal compact powder, but the result can be so much better. After dusting it off, you won’t even be able to tell the difference between the concealer and your actual complexion. You won’t waste any more time either, as you can definitely do something else while letting it “cook”.

Did you know that a lot of celebrities do this to look picture-perfect on camera? So could you, so try it out!

How to Bake Your Makeup

Let me walk you through the steps to create a gorgeous makeup look.

Step 1: Eye Cream

Many people actually skip this step and go straight for liquid makeup. You can do so, it’s fine, but I still recommend putting on some decent eye cream to hydrate the area, that will, later on, be heated up, and also shrink the size of your pores and minimize your fine lines and wrinkles.

Step 2: Liquid Foundation

Well, it’s also okay if you want to go with powder or foundation stick, but your final look can be a bit cakey and the setting powder won’t reach its maximum effect. Choose your go-to liquid foundation, blend it out nicely and evenly on your face including the areas you want to bake.

Step 3: Liquid Concealer

You may want to go a bit extra on this part. Since the powder is sitting for quite a while, it can absorb a lot of moisture and leave your concealer dry, so you need to put a lot of product. Maybe go for another round of application if you need it. Blending it with a damp sponge is the way to go!

Step 4: Bake!

Choose a translucent setting powder that actually works for baking and apply a fair amount (don’t be shy) on your skin using a large brush. Spread it out evenly. Do another coat.

Leave it there for about 10 minutes. You can continue with your normal makeup routine in the meanwhile. The trick is not to move your facial muscles and your head too much so the powder won’t fall out. Yes, you will probably look weird but it works!

After 10 minutes, use the same brush to dust it off gently! Do not use force or the concealer will go with your brush and you’ll have to do it again.
